Diaries and abstracts 1875-1878.

This folder contains the 1875 and 1878 diaries of Frank Rearden, and two small cards that contain abstracts of the diaries' contents. The 1875 diary was written primarily in Caribou, Colorado, and vicinity. Rearden was engaged in hauling and construction work in the Caribou mines; he also mentions a brief stay in Denver. The 1878 diary concerns Rearden's activities as a miner and prospector in Left Hand Canyon, in the vicinity of Sunshine, Colorado. Rearden discovered the Telephone Mine, which he sold on June 4 and November 30, 1878, in exchange for lands in Nebraska, Illinois and Iowa. At the end of 1878, Rearden was working at the Old Bisoneer Mine. He mentions individuals with whom he had businesss dealings in the Sunshine area concerning ores supplies, horses and mining properties, and he frequently writes about his friends in the vicinity of Boulder, Middle Boulder (now Nederland), Jamestown, Longmont, Denver and etc.

Raymond Giddens Carey was born February 17, 1901, in Iola, Kansas. He received his bachelor's degree in 1923 from Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, and attended Hertford College of Oxford University, Oxford, England, from which he received a second bachelor's degree in 1927 and a master's degree in 1931. He received his Ph.D. in 1945 from the University of Chicago. In 1942, he married Faye Kingsbury of Evansville, Indiana. They had two children, Raymond...

Frank Rearden was a miner and prospector who lived and worked in the vicinity of the gold mining towns of Caribou and Sunshine, Colorado. Dr. Raymond Carey of the University of Denver did some descriptive work on the two diaries in the summer of 1966 (cf. the diary abstracts in this folder, also BHS 300 b01 f21).
